The Newburyport Chess Club is one of the longest-running chess clubs in the state of Massachusetts. The club provides a friendly-but-competitive, handicap-accessible site, easily reached from greater Boston, New Hampshire, and all the way to southern Maine. The club holds rated tournaments and casual play weekly, meeting on Thursday nights, opening at 6:30 PM. All tournaments run monthly, starting on the first week of every month and ending on the last week. Members range from beginners to masters, providing challenges for players of all levels.

All comers are welcome. Please view our Results page to see who has been playing.

Tim Chevalier, a young man who played quite a bit of chess at the Newburyport Chess Club, died over the weekend. He was quite young, only in his early 20s. Tim loved chess more than just about anything, and he worked his way all the way up to a peak rating of 2000. More than this, he produced some of his best work at our club, being one of the only players who can claim victories against Frank Sisto, Geoff Collins and yours truly (John Elmore). Tim was a quiet person, and as such he may not have been as well known at club as some, but to many of us, myself included, he was a friend. He'll be missed. For those seeking more information, I saw this obituary online.
